Manager’s Guide

Praeger Publishers, an imprint of the Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., has released the latest CI book by Helicon partners John J. McGonagle and Carolyn M. Vella. The Manager's Guide to Competitive Intelligence is the only book on the market that provides practical, hands-on assistance for the CI professional providing intelligence to one client – his or her employer. It is based on the authors’ extensive client experience over 20 years, as well as on the ground-breaking studies conducted by the American Productivity & Quality Center.

The topics covered range from staffing to drafting mission statements, and from training to planning for CI’s internal growth and development. In addition to its practical, hands-on advice, it contains numerous checklists, forms, and even a self-scoring diagnostic test.

See what one reader says:

"I purchased The Manager's Guide to Competitive Intelligence a few weeks ago, and I've found particularly useful the chapter on "Going Outside for Help".  When a CI consulting firm called me this morning about a potential assignment, I asked the "10 Questions to Ask a CI Consultant" from your book.  The consultant indicated these were great questions, and I got good information to help me make a decision about hiring the consultant.  Congratulations on a great new addition to the CI literature and thanks for the timely help!"

Judith A. Leavitt, Manager, Competitive Intelligence Services, Rockwell Collins, Inc.

The presentation noted that “McGonagle’s contributions to the field of competitive intelligence have been significant in both quality and quantity….His career and his firm are legendary in CI circles. McGonagle’s consulting practice has broadened the base of understanding of and respect for CI in business. “

This same award was given to Carolyn M. Vella, Helicon’s Founding Partner, in 2003. This marks the only time that members of the same competitive intelligence firm have been awarded the Meritorious Award.

About the Award

Candidates for the award may come from any field, including academia, business, and government. The Meritorious Award recognizes “achievement for having advanced, nurtured, and promoted the CI profession across disciplines - in the academic, government, and business communities.”

This has been awarded since 1989. There have been two years when it was not awarded. Past winners include Robert Galvin, and Professor Michael Porter. Galvin is a former CEO of Motorola, Inc., and credited with creating the first formal competitive intelligence unit in an American firm.
